Sri Lankan Buddhist Monk Donates in Kiharu

Nine physically challenged persons, Murang’a district hospital and Muriranjas Sub district hospital were recent beneficiaries from donations worth hundred thousands of shillings from Ven. Bhante Y. Wimala, a Buddhist monk from Sri Lanka.

The donor had been invited by Kiharu Member of Parliament Hon. BC Muturi Mwangi. The monk said his donations were a calling driven by a passion to help the less fortunate in the society. Among the items donated were a weighing machine to determine babies’ weight, an incubator, wheel chairs, sets of crutches and walkers.

The recipients of the wheel chairs were John Mbogo Njoroge, Kellen Wanjiru Kugwa and Veronicah Wanjeri Macharia all from Weithaga location and Samuel Waiharo Kageni and Peter Gatune Munyua who come from Mugoiri and Kahuhia locations respectively.

The rest were Ann Wanjiru Macharia and Kennedy Ndegwa Kagwa both from Mugoiri and Mary Muthoni Ng’ang’a from Mbiri location.

The Member of Parliament thanked the donor for his selfless dedication saying the items will make a great difference to the hospitals and to the physically challenged whose mobility would now be made easier.

Relatives who accompanied their patients to Murang’a district hospital to receive the wheel chairs fought back tears of joy saying it was a dream come true. They explained the endless hassles they undergo while taking care of their kin some of who cannot stand nor perform any tasks unaided. Others narrated of the tribulations they have encountered for over 20 years trying to secure wheel chairs that have remained elusive.

On behalf of the hospital, the medical Superintendent Dr. C. N. Kigo who also accompanied Ven. Wimala and the Member of Parliament to Muriranjas Sub district hospital in Kahuro said the hospitals were in dire need of many items that are lacking including kits for an operation theatre. He called on other individuals and organizations to emulate the monk and come forward with any kind of donation.

The monk also donated two new computers to Dr. Kiano Girls Secondary school in Kahuro division. Through his mercy mission, he said he has now donated 266 wheel chairs in the country. He has also built 10 homes to IDP’s in Molo.

The donations were made on 24th November 2008.
